Recent months has seen a national increase in outbreaks of a new strain
of Rabbit Viral Haemorrhagic Diarrhoea (RHV/VHD). While we have
traditionally vaccinated for RHV strain 1, this doesn't provide
protection against RHV strain 2. The new strain can cause sudden death,
lethargy, inappetence and diarrhoea. If you are concerned for your
rabbit, as always, a sick rabbit should be seen as quickly as possible
as they can deteriorate very quickly. Rabbits are prey animals, so by
the time they show signs, there is usually quite a serious problem.
good news is that a vaccine is available! However, it does need to be
imported from France, so please call up before and make sure you
specifcy that you require the "RHV2" vaccination. This must be given at
least two weeks apart from any other vaccination and gives protection
for one year (under current UK conditions).
