What to do before surgery

Food

Nine Mile vets ask that any pet undergoing elective surgery (not emergency) are starved from 8pm the evening before their operation. This is to reduce the risk of them vomiting during their anaesthetic, which can be potentially dangerous. Pets can have access to water overnight but please remove this on the morning of their operation. It is best to keep cats indoors before their operation so we can be sure they have not eaten.

We politely request that you bring in a selection of your rabbit’s food, including hay, so that we can get them eating as soon after their operation as possible.

Toilets

Please take your dog out for a short walk to enable them to urinate and defecate before their surgery. Cats will not always oblige by using a litter tray although it is not a problem if they don’t go to the toilet before we admit them.

Carriers

Please transport all dogs to the clinic on a lead and all small animals, including cats, in a secure carrier case. We will admit your pet and then usually ask you to take your carrier home with you and bring it back when you collect your pet.
