Feeding

“You are what you eat.” This rings true for your kitten as well. Nine Mile vets recommend choosing a high quality complete kitten food to feed your puppy and Hills Kitten is our food of choice. Our vets and nurses are happy to advise you on the best food for your kitten and we offer FREE sample packs of Hills Kitten at your kitten’s first consultation.

Some common questions about feeding:

Should I feed wet or dry?
There is no correct answer to this and is dependent on a number of factors. Dry food is generally easier to measure out accurately to ensure your kitten is being fed the right amount, and can help limit tartar development on your cat’s teeth. Wet food has a higher moisture content and so can be a great way of getting extra water into your cat. Nine Mile vets don’t, however, recommend feeding a mixture of wet and dry as it is difficult to accurately assess the calories being fed. Your vet or nurse will be happy to advise you further.

How many times a day should I feed my kitten?
Nine Mile vets recommend feeding kittens between 3-4 small meals per day, gradually reducing to 2 per day as they grow.

Should I give my kitten treats?
Sensible use of treats as a training aid and reward is fine as long as they are taken into consideration with regard to the total amount fed per day. It is surprising how the ‘occasional treat’ can soon add up and cause your pet to become overweight. Keeping aside a small amount of your kitten’s dry food to be used as treats is a good idea and can help reward your kitten when training. Cat nip is also a great idea for treating your cat as they love it!
