How to brush your pets teeth

Whether your pet is old or young, remember to slowly introduce a brushing program.  Your aim is to keep the brushing sessions short and positive.  Your pet needs to know this is a fun activity, so give your pet lots of praise and reassurance throughout the process.

You will need to purchase some pet friendly tooth paste plus tooth brush.  Pet friendly tooth paste is designed to be non-foaming and is flavoured to encourage positive acceptability with your pet.

Initially socialise your pet to contact around their face, lips, mouth and gradually teeth.  The pace that this stage progresses will be entirely dependent on the co-operation of your pet and how much previous handling they have had around their head and face.

Once your pet is confident being held and touched over their face and mouth, use your finger with a peasized or less amount of pet friendly tooth paste and rub over the outside of the teeth.  Again keep the session short and positive.  Start over their incisors and canines and as they adapt to this, move your finger backwards over their cheek teeth.

Next increase the contact time of your finger with each tooth and introduce a circular cleaning action.

Once this step has been accomplished, progress from using your finger to a finger brush, then onto a tooth brush designed for pets.  The bristles are designed to be soft and comfortable for you pets mouth, so as not to hurt them.

Congratulations!  You've got there.  Just remember to brush your pets teeth once daily!
